Intimate graphic design department at premier lifestyle trade publisher seeks highly creative Art Director to join in-house team. Art Director is a key creative member of the design department, and works closely with creative director and editorial department to to create, design, and manage book design concepts, with an emphasis on illustrated titles, including digital products. Will produce book interiors and jackets, eBooks, promotional and sales materials, online and print ads, and publicity/marketing collateral for assigned titles.
�Collaborates with Creative Director and editorial team to create one-off book and cover designs, from concept to print-ready files, within established budget and guidelines.
�Take part in creative sessions for project kick-offs, establish solid relationships with authors
�Negotiate photographers� and illustrators� fees and contracts
�Art direct photography shoots
�Researches stock illustrations and photographs for use in books or on book covers.
�Source, hire, and direct freelancers when needed: write creative briefs, negotiate and process contracts, and review all incoming work
�Maintains schedules and meets deadlines on assigned projects.
�Color corrects and proofs digital photography using color calibrated monitor and printer.
�Reviews and approves production proofs and ozalids.
�Coordinates with sales and marketing department to design print and online ads, catalog materials, posters, dummy books, and other publicity/marketing materials.
�A high collaborative work style, with the ability to interact positively and effectively with editorial, marketing and publicity, production, as well as authors, photographers, and other outside suppliers
�Exceptional visual judgment, with constantly refreshed creative ideas and active input regarding the development of the list as a whole
�Good communication: a clear, articulate spokesperson for design
�Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, and timely and efficient follow-up
�Open to new ideas
�Possess a strong grasp of design technology, including emerging digital publishing platforms
�Connected to the larger design community and mindful of industry best practice
�Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 6: InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat Distiller and Acrobat Pro.
�Working knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
�Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, full-color printing processes, RGB/CMYK color spaces, and image formats, and facility with color correction of digital photography.
At least 3 years experience in art direction, preferably as Art Director in an illustrated book publishing imprint.
