Intimate graphic design department at premier lifestyle trade publisher seeks highly creative book designer to join in-house team. Designer works closely with art director and editorial department to conceive and refine book design concepts, with an emphasis on illustrated titles and formats, including digital products. Designs and produces book interiors and jackets, eBooks, promotional and sales materials, online and print ads, and publicity/marketing collateral for assigned titles.
Responsibilities and duties:
Performs most or all of the following functions:
�Collaborates with Creative Director and editorial team to create one-off book and cover designs, from concept to print-ready files, within established budget and guidelines.
�Take part in creative sessions for project kick-offs, establish solid relationships with authors
�Implements editorial text corrections to interior book pages.
�Assists with design and correction of eBooks, enhanced eBooks, and eBook originals.
�Researches stock illustrations and photographs for use in books or on book covers.
�Source, hire, and direct freelancers when needed: write creative briefs, negotiate and process contracts, and review all incoming work
�Maintains schedules and meets deadlines on assigned projects.
�Color corrects and proofs digital photography using color calibrated monitor and printer.
�Reviews and approves production proofs and ozalids.
�Coordinates with sales and marketing department to design print and online ads, catalog materials, posters, dummy books, and other publicity/marketing materials.
Essential Abilities or Functions:
�Graphic design skills and computer/technical knowledge for book production
�Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 6: InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat Distiller and Acrobat Pro.
�Working knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
�Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, full-color printing processes, RGB/CMYK color spaces, and image formats, and facility with color correction of digital photography
�Ability to think creatively and be an effective problem solver, while staying in budget and on schedule
�Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and coordinate workload under pressure and meet deadlines
�Good communication skills
�Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently
Experience and education:
�4 year college degree/BFA/art technical school preferred
�0-3 years experience, preferably in print design
�Experience in online media design (website and app design, user interface, interactivity) desired, but not required
